cPanel VPS Hosting
Even though it is rather new, the VPS web hosting service is quickly gaining strength and is becoming one of the most popular web hosting services, available today. This is due to the fact that more and more people realize the flexibility and the diversity that the Virtual Private Servers offer. To better understand that, let's have a look at
What a Private server is
On the shared hosting service, many users share the features of one server. This, of course, sets certain limitations on each client, for instance, the amount of CPU usage that the specific account may use. The crucial point is that if one shared web hosting account generates too much traffic, or takes too much of the CPU usage time, it will actually interfere with the performance of the other shared hosting accounts on that server. Therefore, accounts that exceed those limitations, usually get suspended by the web hosting provider, in order to keep the other shared accounts operational. Private web servers are dedicated to just one user, therefore, the risk of suspension is highly reduced. The private servers themselves fall under two categories- virtual servers and dedicated hosting servers. The dedicated servers are actual physical machines, while the virtual servers are virtual machines and are the cheaper equivalent of the dedicated web hosting servers.
Functionality of the VPS hosting
The VPS hosting services are known for their flexibility. They can be used for a variety of web hosting purposes, which vary from as far hosting an online VOIP system, to simply hosting a single webpage. Of course, the different services will require a different amount of programming and system administration skills, but the point is that virtual web servers can be used for practically any web hosting purpose possible.
Managing the VPS account
Back in the day, before the web hosting control panels were widely accepted by the web hosting community, the web hosting services were managed through secured shell consoles exclusively. Since the popularisation of the web hosting in general, however, today consoles are rarely used by the majority of hosting users. Nevertheless, the VPS accounts are private servers, therefore as such, their come without a web hosting control panel by default. People today are so used to using graphical interfaces that they believe that any web hosting service should have a control panel included in the package. The truth, however, is that the control panels are additional programs that are installed on the web servers. When a new web server is created, it has no control panel. The system administrator has to install the hosting CP manually, if he wishes to have one of course. Therefore, since VPS accounts are in fact private web servers, they come without a control panel by default. Most web hosting companies do offer web hosting control panels as additional services to their VPS plans, however the user has to specify that he wishes to have that additional service, otherwise the server will be provided to him with just access through a console. Managing a VPS without a control panel can be quite hard for a novice web hosting user, therefore, it is always advisable to order the server with a CP. A good solution for a VPS control panel, is the cPanel.
